Libertad/PAR 2-0 Palmeiras

We knew it would be hard to walk all over Libertad at their home grounds. We nourished the hope they wouldn’t walk all over us. They did.

Libertad are not a strong team defensively, and they address this shortcoming by attacking relentlessly,  applying pressure high up on the opponents side and execute speedy counter-attacks from the flanks. Add to this a certain lack of guile from our side – for example when a nose-bleeding Henrique was taken off the pitch at the moment the Paraguayans were preparing the set piece cross that resulted in the second goal – and you get the picture just fine: Palmeiras, a team still in the making, were dominated more or less from start to finish. Check out the goals below (in case you want to see the full game, use this link).

Without any obligations this weekend, Palmeiras focus on improving teamwork and physical form ahead of Wednesday’s important duel with Tigres in Victoria, province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Tigres are at the bottom of group 2 after two losses and are the team to beat if Palmeiras are to aspire for that much desired spot in the knockout phase. Three points against Tigres and a victory at home for Libertad vs. Sporting Cristal would be a jackpot.

The squad trains today, rest on Sunday, then goes back to training on Monday before embarking on a plane to Argentina. Expect Palmeiras’ strongest eleven in the line-up on matchday.
