São Paulo state Championship
Palmeiras’ last two appearances in the São Paulo state Championship delivered two rather uninspiring results: a tight 1-0 victory against Guarani at the Allianz Parque and a goalless draw against Santos playing at the Pacaembu Stadium.
In both games, Palmeiras created enough to score more goals, but a lack of aim hindered better results. The Big Green remain with the second best overall performance, two points behind Santo André, with whom they share the group.
Rony is Palmeiras’ second signing
Remember we told you in early February that the Athlético striker was keen on renewing and that negotiations with Palmeiras were practically over? Well, two weeks later Athlético and player once again got into disagreement and Palmeiras renewed their offer, this time seducing everyone involved. On 21 February the 24-year-old became Palmeiras’ second signing of the season. With a rather hefty price tag of € 6 million for 50% of the economic rights (tbc), Rony better repeat his good performance from previous two seasons, when he was instrumental in Athlético’s 2018 South America Cup title and the 2019 Brazil Cup title.
Welcome and best of luck, Rony!
New jerseys
Puma today launched Palmeiras’ 2020 home and away kits. Supporters received the design with quite some hesitation, but the video-manifesto Puma created for the launch was so well-crafted and aligned with our history that it took the edge of critics, making the kits instantly majestic.
Both home and away jerseys feature a print that resembles the document received by Italian immigrants upon arrival to Brazil. The debut of the new kit takes place Wednesday, at the match against Tigre, in the first round of the group stage of the 2020 Libertadores Cup.
2020 Libertadores Cup
Palmeiras make their debut in Argentina, on Wednesday, at 7:15pm. Training sessions indicate Luxemburgo will repeat the line-up for the third time in a row, with Gabriel Menino improvised as right-back. Matias Viña, who against Santos left the pitch sustaining a minor injury, has trained normally and is a likely starter.
Besides Palmeiras and Tigre, Group B is composed of Bolívar (Bolivia) and Guaraní (Paraguay).
