Palmeiras put out an uninspiring performance and scored a late goal to secure the advantage of playing for a draw in the return leg of the Brazil Cup Group of 16.
The goal was scored on stoppage time by Moisés, who took a free kick from far away to receive the keeper’s blessing.
Line-up
Prass; Mayke, Antônio Carlos, Edu Dracena and Victor Luís; Felipe Melo, Moisés and Lucas Lima (Felipe Pires); Hyoran (Dudu), Carlos Eduardo and Arthur (Deyverson).
Nobody was booked.
Green light
Palmeiras’ defensive line remained solid despite the alternative line-up. It was the 21th clean sheet in 28 games played in 2019.
Yellow light
Against a much weaker opponent, Palmeiras’ difficulties to create scoring opportunities were again evident. Halfway into the second half, Felipão tried to improve things promoting Dudu, but to little effect.
Red light
Carlos Eduardo failed everything he tried, be it a shot, a dribble or a pass. The winger threw away yet another chance to win the supporters over. Lucas Lima also had a very bad evening: if he can’t even dominate the midfield against Sampaio Corrêa, what use is he to Palmeiras?
A hundred
Against Sampaio Corrêa, left-back Victor Luis marked down his 100th game in the Palmeiras jersey. Among the regular starters, the 25-year-old is the only originating from the club’s youth divisions.
Next challenge
Botafogo, away, on Saturday 25 May, for the Brazilian Championship. The alternative line-up against Sampaio Corrêa secured that key players are in full condition to beat the cariocas, keeping Palmeiras in pole position while sustaining the streak of undefeated games in the tournament.
