Within hours, Palmeiras will announce the signing of Paraguayan defender Gustavo Gómez. Expectation is for Gómez to quickly secure a spot in the starting line-up, currently composed of Antônio Carlos and Edu Dracena.
The 25-year-old arrives on loan from Milan until mid-2019 at a cost of €1.5 million. Should he play a certain number of matches as a starter, Palmeiras are required to purchase him, the pricetag set at €4.5 million. Gómez can play the Libertadores Cup and the Brazilian championship, but arrived too late for registration in the Brazil Cup.
Although Gómez last season in Europe only played one game for Milan, warming the bench on another 24 occasions, he is a starter in the Paraguayan national team alongside Balbuena (West Ham). Until recently in the sights also of Boca Juniors and Flamengo, Gómez is the centre-back Palmeiras wanted from the beginning of the year to replace Yerry Mina.
Besides the Paraguayan and aforementioned Antônio Carlos and Dracena, Palmeiras coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has four more options for the centre lock: Thiago Martins, Luan, Pedrão and recently arrived Nico Freire.
Welcome and good luck, Gustavo!
