Cruzeiro were bottom dweller only the other day, but came pumped after a 4-0 away victory against Ponte Preta. And it showed. Palmeiras opened up the scorecard with Gabriel Jesus, but the mineiros equalised shortly after and dominated the rest of the game. A fair victory on a night that little went Palmeiras’ way and Cuca seemed rather lost, trying Fabiano on the flank and Luan up front.

We would have felt the sting even more had it not been for an almost perfect round: our two closest contenders also lost: Grêmio away to Atlético Paranaense and, more surprisingly, Internacional at home to Botafogo. With that, after eleven rounds Palmeiras remain in first with 22 points, followed by Internacional (20), now Santos (19), Corinthians (19) and Grêmio (18).
On Tuesday, Palmeiras close the 12th round against Figueirense, looking at sustaining the perfect home streak with a seventh consecutive victory. After that, a novelty: Monday night football, a first in Brazil, with Palmeiras travelling to Recife to face Sport to close round 13. A harder nut to crack, but a good test if Dudu’s talk the other day about Palmeiras needing to start winning away games was anything more than words.
There is also some coming and going in the squad, but more about that when formal notifications have been made available.
