Left-back Matías Viña will be announced by Roma (ITA) possibly this weekend. The transfer comes at a tag of € 11 million, plus € 3 million linked to performance goals. Palmeiras is at the outset to receive 8 out of the 11 million, the remaining 3 million destined for Nacional (URU), holder of the remaining parts of Viña’s economic rights. Any additional amount originating from goal achievements will only go to Palmeiras.
Viña’s replacement have already arrived, and it’s a double: 25-year-old Jorge was at Monaco (FRA), and Palmeiras is now the holder of 50% of the players economic rights. The former Flamengo and Santos left-back has signed a contract running until end of 2025 and is currently in the final stages of recovery from a serious knee injury suffered in December of last year. The player has a total of 13 caps for Brazil, including in the U20, U23 and first squad.
Ready to play as of arrival is Palmeiras’ second signing, 22-year-old Joaquín Piquerez from Uruguay. A regular starter at Peñarol, the physically strong athlete with an offensive mindset is expected to perform well both in a defensive line composed of three and of four players, and even fill position in midfield. Piquerez totals 30 caps in Uruguay’s U17, U22 and U23 squads.
All in all, seems like Palmeiras operated the transfer market swiftly and successfully this time, assuring more than one good replacement for the vacant position.
Centre-forward Miguel Borja briefly touched base at Palmeiras only to once more be involved in a loan deal, this time with Grêmio. The club from Porto Alegre will pay Palmeiras around US$ 1 million in order to have the player in its ranks until the end of 2022. Grêmio will also cover 100% of the Colombian’s salary. In case Palmeiras wish to sell Borja, the gaúchos cannot oppose the transfer. Seems like an overall good deal for everyone involved, especially Palmeiras and Borja. For Grêmio, time will tell.
