An old friend and a new face have joined Palmeiras’ Academia de Futebol.
The former is Henrique “Cutthroat” Dourado, who had a great year at Palmeiras in 2014, scoring 18 goals in 39 games – the club’s top scorer that year. Following year he went to Cruzeiro, then Portuguese side Vitória Guimarões, before again hitting the spotlights with Fluminense, becoming top scorer of the 2017 Brazilian championship. After a so-so spell at Flamengo the following year, he in 2019 joined Henan Jianye, but early on suffered an injury. As the Chinese club also exceeded the number of foreigners in the squad, Dourado was offered to Palmeiras on a no-cost, 6-months loan agreement.
So far in his career, 29-year-old Dourado has scored 171 goals in 326 games. No telling if he will get new opportunities at Palmeiras, but at zero cost, it’s certainly worth including him in the squad. Apart from being an excellent executor of penalties, he has great charisma.

The new face is Luiz Adriano, formally presented yesterday at the Football Academy. On a 4-year contract, the centre-forward has been training with the squad for a few days and is already available for Sunday’s game against Bahia.
Luiz Adriano initiated his career at Internacional of Porto Alegre, where he won the 2006 Libertadores and FIFA World Cup before spending 13 years in Europe: nine hugely successful years with Shakhtar Donetsk, two not so great seasons with Milan and most recently two good seasons at Spartak Moscow. Luiz Adriano totals 161 goals in 401 games played – including four caps for Brazil. Palmeiras have purchased 50% of the 32-year-old’s economic rights, the other 50% remaining with the Russian club.
Luiz Adriano has rather different characteristics compared to Borja and Deyverson, who are both one-touch strikers: Luiz Adriano sets up plays, is way more participative, knows how to work the ball. He is rather tall for Brazilian standards (1.84) and surprisingly fast. All in all, a versatile player that should provide Scolari with plenty of tactical options.
Welcome and best of luck to both Dourado and Luiz Adriano!
