Graced with the return of several recovered players after the covid outburst in the squad, Abel Ferreira repeated the line-up without a fixed centre-forward, Rony being the most advanced player on the pitch, and the bet paid off again. Intense from the early minutes, Palmeiras scored the opener already in the 7th minute, with Patrick de Paula firing a missile, beautifully assisted by Lucas Lima. The opportunities persisted and in the 36th, Rony scored his first goal in the Brazilian League.
The second half started in the same fashion, with Athletico Paranaense barely passing the midfield and already in the 49th minute, Rony scored his second, with a beautiful header, putting final numbers to the game. The remainder of the game saw Palmeiras wasting a few opportunities to increase the goal difference, but the result was already excellent.
Weverton; Gabriel Menino, Emerson Santos, Gustavo Gómez, Viña; Danilo, Zé Rafael (Gabriel Silva) and Patrick de Paula (Luan); Scarpa (Alan Empereur), Lucas Lima (Breno Lopes) and Rony (Gabriel Veron).
Danilo and Gabriel Menino received yellow cards; none of them will thus be available against Santos next weekend.
Against his former team, Rony maintained his good momentum, scoring a brace and making substantially less mistakes than in previous games. Could we possibly see Rony the ugly duck become a swan, instead of Ramires?
Palmeiras put out a steady and sound performance that gives us no reason to criticize anything. Athletico was neutralized the ninety minutes, Weverton almost not participating at all of the game.
Ramires, praised by Abel Ferreira on Wednesday, yesterday came to an agreement with Palmeiras to put a premature end to his contract, leaving the club after 45 games and only one goal. Although most would surely agree the cost-benefit of having Ramires in the squad was low, the sudden exit raises eyebrows.
Palmeiras return the attention to the Libertadores Cup, where Delfín await for the second leg of the round-of-16, on Wednesday, December 2nd. Having won the first leg 3-1, Palmeiras enjoy a huge advantage to secure a spot on the quarterfinals in the quest to conquer the America.

*Here at Anything Palmeiras, we love football. We love Palmeiras. We are always keen to see Palmeiras play, and keen to write about it for you. But we’re against the return of football in a country that still hasn’t controlled the coronavirus pandemic. We express our deepest sympathy to the families whose loved ones have been taken by the disease.
