The promise of a spectacular derby with a great audience at Presidente Prudente set the backdrop for an extremely important game. A loss against leaders and arch-rivals Corinthians, and Palmeiras could more or less say goodbye to any title aspirations this season. Instead, the fresh three points narrowed the gap between the two teams to five points with exactly half the competition, i.e. 19 games, to go. Palmeiras rest at sixth place, but the positive trend in terms of performance on the pitch, combined with the arrival of a few (modest) but specifically targeted reinforcements and a politically more stable environment, give certain space for optimism.
Speaking of reinforcements: Fernandão made his debut against the skunks and WHAT a DEBUT! Not only was he directly involved in the situation that led to the equaliser in the first half; quite early in the second half he took down a perfect pass from Assunção on his chest and volleyed the ball past the Corinthians goalkeeper. Sheer class from the 190 cm tall forward, who’s presence in the penalty area served as a reference point for Palmeiras’ attack and allowed Kleber to fall back a bit, seeking the ball the way he likes to.
We also saw great performances from São Marcos, Assunção, Chicão and, in particular, Luan. I’m sure you will enjoy the highlights.
