Palmeiras displayed certain difficulties to penetrate Coruripe’s dense defence in the first half but with Felipão promoting Pedro Carmona on Patrik in halftime the creativeness of the midfield – until then weak due to the absence of both Valdivia (suspended) and Daniel Carvalho (muscle fatigue) improved considerably. But it was Mastermind Assunção who opened up the scorecard with one of his patented free kicks. Barcos and Juninho completed the party. And once again it became clear how extremely important it is for Palmeiras to have at least one true playmaker on the pitch: the direct link defence-attack is not working, as it didn’t last season. Carmona today, perhaps for the first time, showed that he does have a role in the squad, even if only as backup to messieurs Valdivia and Carvalho.
Palmeiras are now through to the second round of the Brazil Cup where Horizonte from Ceará await. With all due respect: Horizonte will indeed have to wait for any attention from palmeirenses as Sunday treats us to a magnificent derby against biggest rival and current national champions Corinthians for the 15th round of the São Paulo Championship. Start looking forward to Sunday night and the celebrations for Palmeiras having equalled their historical record of 23 straight games without losing.
